Miles Lawton Gracey (b. 1987) uses sculptural furniture to build and expand upon narratives within domestic spaces, blending fact with fiction to create scenes both functional and fanciful. Through the use of ornamentation, decoration, and craft, he finds allegory and metaphor in the seemingly superficial artifice of adornment. Wood, then, offers space for the sediment of time to be manipulated with a masterful understanding of the tools and materials— breathing life into objects, telling stories through things.
Growing up in a small coastal town in California, Gracey’s world view is through the lens of the sea. Themes of shelter, femininity, nature, and familial history are carved into his work. Trained as a traditional cabinet and furniture maker, coupled with a love of mythology, science fiction, and fantasy, result in a meticulously crafted expression of the living spirits within lived spaces.
